Syphilis Symptoms
Syphilis can progress through 3 different stages. Sometimes not everything is clear, such as:
Primary stage
The primary stage usually presents with a sore at the site of infection. The wound is called a chancre. These sores usually appear as painless sores on the male genitalia or on the female genitalia, although any part of the body is at risk.
Anyone who touches an infected wound can become infected as well. These early sores develop within 2 to 3 weeks of infection and heal spontaneously after 3 to 6 weeks. Even though the pain went away, the disease didn’t go away. This proceeds to the secondary stage.
Secondary stage
This stage has many symptoms. This stage can go away without treatment, but the disease then enters stage 3. This is the most common secondary stage symptoms, such as fever, joint pain, muscle aches, sore throat and flu-like symptoms, rash all over the body.
Latent stage (inactive)
The early latent stage (12 months after infection) is characterized by the absence of symptoms. However, sufferers at this stage are still contagious.
The late latent stage is the asymptomatic stage when the infection occurred more than 12 months earlier and the sufferer is generally not contagious. However, it can still transmit the infection from mother to fetus or through blood transfusions.
Tertiary stage
Some people with the latent stage will develop after many years into the tertiary stage. Congenital syphilis appears after the fetus is infected in the womb. This form of syphilis causes dental abnormalities, bone problems, enlarged liver, spleen, kidneys, brain infections, failure to thrive or poor growth, swollen lymph nodes, yellow skin (jaundice), low blood counts and skin rashes.
With Treatment, Can Syphilis Be Cured?
Unlike the diagnosis, the treatment is quite easy. During the primary, secondary and early latent stages of syphilis, early dose treatment can cure the disease.
A person who is allergic to the medication (and is not pregnant) may be given oral antibiotic treatment for 2 weeks. A person diagnosed as being in the late latent stage and suffering from the tertiary stage will require treatment 1 week apart from each other.
Oral antibiotic treatment is usually given to people in this stage who are allergic to the medication. If syphilis has progressed to neurosyphilis (or brain involvement), treatment every 4 hours for 10 days to 14 days may be necessary.
A pregnant woman with syphilis should take medication, even if allergic to medication. Therefore, you should always consult a doctor.
